Along with 17,000+ other security- minded professionals, I’m at RSA in San Francisco this week. For those who are not familiar with the RSA Conference, it’s the premier information security conference of the year. It attracts the best and brightest security folks from around the world. In addition, it is a great place to keep up with what’s going on in the information security marketplace. I’m at RSA to not only see what’s going on in the industry, but to also talk about some of the cool new security features in Windows 7.

We’re really excited about Windows 7’s new security features. This next OS is built upon the proven security technologies in Windows Vista and provides a fundamentally secure computing platform. We not only utilized enhanced Security Development Lifecycle (SDL) process during planning, development and testing but we also have worked to make the security features more discoverable, usable and manageable. These enhancements give Windows 7 the expanded security offerings to provide the necessary security controls to help mobile workers access the information they need to be productive, wherever and whenever they need it.

There is a lot of new stuff in Windows 7, but let me highlight some of those things that go into helping the mobile worker…

Almost anyone who has been following the development of Windows 7 knows that it’s currently kernel version 6.1. But all that could be set to change, at least if an obscure MSDN page is to be believed.

In a page describing device installation with the Windows Driver Kit, the documentation shows “Msft.NT.7.0″ being used as a label to specify drivers only for use with Windows 7.

Previously, Neowin reported that Mike Nash, Corporate VP of Windows Product Management, posted on on the Windows Vista Team Blog with the official explanation that Windows 7 would be kernel version 6.1.

“So we decided to ship the Windows 7 code as Windows 6.1 - which is what you will see in the actual version of the product in cmd.exe or computer properties. There’s been some fodder about whether using 6.1 in the code is an indicator of the relevance of Windows 7. It is not. Windows 7 is a significant and evolutionary advancement of the client operating system. It is in every way a major effort in design, engineering, and innovation. The only thing to read into the code versioning is that we are absolutely committed to making sure application compatibility is optimized for our customers.”

Has this changed? Is “Msft.NT.7.0″ just a way of expressing Windows 7 and not kernel version 7, if not, why not just say NT.6.1 in the INF? Or is the documentation incorrect? It remains to be seen.

Windows 7 RC is expected to go public on May 5, so hopefully that will reflect this change.

Windows 7 RC will be released to MSDN/Technet on May 5th…..

A page over at Microsoft Partners has been updated to show that Windows 7 RC will be publically released on May 5, and should be available for MSDN and Technet subscribers now. However, clicking through the download link will only get you the beta, right now.

This would seem to jive with an earlier leak on a Microsoft page saying that the RC would be available in May, but that was taken down soon after it was reported.

Well see how long this page stays updated with the Windows 7 RC information, or how long it’ll take before RC does actually hit MSDN and Technet.

Partners: If you have a subscription to MSDN or TechNet, you can download Windows 7 RC now. Otherwise, you can download Windows 7 RC starting May 5, 2009.

As you know chinese hackers leaked new verison of windows 7 which is 7106. They only leaked Chinese version of windows 7. I was thinking that if they are able to leak chinese version why they couldn’t leak english? I think they want to increase reputation of chinese. If someone can leak chinese he can also leak english which is the core language of windows 7. Maybe this can be something like a Conspiracy theory but it can be real.
I want to know your thoughts

Windows generally has a lesser reputation in terms of security when put up against Linux and Apple. But this didn’t stop Microsoft’s chief operating officer Kevin Turner, from making this daring statement at the Midmarket CIO Summit:

Vista today, post-Service Pack 2, which is now in the marketplace, is the safest, most reliable OS we’ve ever built. It’s also the most secure OS on the planet, including Linux and open source and Apple Leopard. It’s the safest and most secure OS on the planet today. Everything that we’ve learned in Vista will be leveraged in Windows 7, but certainly when we broke a lot of the compatibility issues to lock down user account controls, to lock down the ability to manipulate states and all the things, that was a very painful process for us to grow through, but we had to do it. And the reason that Windows 7 will be successful is because of the pain we took on Vista. Because from a compatibility standpoint, if it works on Vista, it will work on Windows 7. If it doesn’t work on Vista, it won’t work on Windows 7.

It was pretty bold of Turner to place Windows on the same field as Linux and Leopard and claim them all as most seure OSes on the planet. He just placed three very different OSes in comparison and called them the most secure - how does that work?

Here are a few comments from the community in response to his statement. The first one is from Adrian at ZDNet. I don’t understand why Adrian feels Microsoft is calling Windows the most secure OS, since Turner made sure to include Linux, open source (?), and Leopard.

Being primarily a Windows user, I can’t help but feel that Microsoft’s “most secure OS on the planet” statement is rooted more in hyperbole than fact. If Turner had said “most secure Windows OS on the planet” I might have been happy to buy that. But to say that it’s more secure than Mac OS X or Linux, gimme a break. All my Windows machines are beefed up with additional body armor in the form of firewalls and antivirus applications, additions that are unnecessary on my Linux or Mac systems.

Ron from LockerGnome raised a good point:

Is it the OS that protects the user or the user that protects the OS? Let me explain. I’ve used Windows since Windows 3 and have used every version up to and including Windows 7 beta. I personally have never had an infection on any of my computers. Yet millions of other have been infected. I know some of you who visit LG regularly have also stated that you also have never been infected.

At the end of the day, no matter how secure Microsoft claims Windows to be, it would be a difficult statement to believe in. With the largest market share in the world, common sense tells us attackers would go for what affects most people, and that there are more attackers using Windows and are familiar with it than any other operating system. Can Windows ever be the most secure OS? What’s your take on this?

So I’ve actually been meaning to write this for a while because it’s been annoying the hell out of me.  I have seen people saying that 7105 and 7106 of Windows 7 are RC builds and the RC will be > 7100.  Well all I can say to those people is that you’re wrong, you fail, and you need to learn how the development process works inside Redmond before you go spouting about a build being an RC ESCROW or now.

There’s also the other camp (*cough* Thurrott *cough*) that seems to think that Microsoft is strictly working on RC and have not let winmain continue building towards RTM.  Again, learn how the process works before you talk.

Ok so now I will attempt to explain all of this so you guys can walk away from reading this post knowing how it works in Sinofsky’s lair.

Basically, after build 7076 the tree was split.  7077 was compiled as an RC ESCROW build (winmain_win7rc) and the winmain lab bumped its build number up to 7105.  7077 and on are code frozen, meaning no feature changes will occur in that branch (the RC branch.  This allows them to work out the bugs to deliver a high quality RC release.

Any code changes internally are checked into winmain (7105 and higher at this point).  So from that standpoint you could say that codewise 7105, 7106 etc… are newer than the RC will be as those builds are still receiving new check-ins from the various fbl labs.

So for those who are wondering I will answer the question.  7105 or higher are NOT RC builds, but rather winmain builds pushing towards RTM.  7077, 7078, 7079, 7080 etc… are all RC ESCROW builds.  When the RC has passed testing, they will compile the final RC build as 7100.

Hope this clears up some of the confusion.  As usual if you have any questions feel free to ask!

This is _ONLY_ for x64 for now.

Ok its semi working, however instalation is bit complicated :)

First of all download pack and extract it somewhere on C:.

1st: You need to copy ALL folders to C:\ and overwrite everything, however it will give you premission problems even if you copy as admin since lots of files are protected, so what i suggest is to boot it from Win7 english DVD (version doesnt matter), chose repair there and copy from that command prompt with xcopy. I added “1stcopyme.cmd” that you can run when you are there so you dont need to use xcopy :)

2nd: boot in to windows, it will still be in chinese, so you run “2ndrunmeasadmin.cmd” as admin doh! reboot and windows should be in english!

thanks to Viper_zzz for method.

EDIT: 1stcopyme.cmd script _ONLY_ works if you have windows parition when booted from DVD on C:\
EDIT2: 2ndrunmeasadmin.cmd is broken ;) so just apply English in to registry and reboot

You can download from this url

This is the proof

As reported earlier that Windows 7 build 7106 will be leaked, here is it after little delay. Windows 7 build 7106 x86 and x64 has been finally leaked on torrent, but it is a Chinese version…hopefully English version will be out shortly.. Here are the Screenshots of Windows 7 build 7106.
